United Missile Defense Company

The United Missile Defense Company (UMDC) was a joint venture between Lockheed Martin, Ratheon, and TRW formed to bid on the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) contract to develop a national missile defense system. UMDC sought the support of Fed Computer Services to establish and maintain their network infrastructure for the proposal develop-ment process and to plan their corporate infrastructure in the event of a contract win. At the onset, UMDC consisted of 35 nodes on a shared 10Mb network. Fed Computer Services supported all IT infrastructure requirements as the network increased to 700 nodes. Fed Computer Services built a fully switched, fast Ethernet network to support these users and seven shared servers. Fed Computer Services was ultimately responsible for data, voice, and video network integration for UMDC’s entire computer and communications infrastructure, office automation, and groupware environment. Fed Computer Services established a network operations center and help desk support center.

In addition to our network support responsibilities, Fed Computer Services was selected to coordinate the advanced architectural planning for the UMDC post-award network. This effort entailed designing a network to incorporate a large and diverse computer and communications environment as well as implementing and integrating four business systems to support accounting, human resources, earned value, and scheduling applications. Fed Computer Services implemented these applications and began efforts to integrate them into a web-based reporting environment. Ultimately, UMDC lost the bid for the Missile Defense System. However, Fed Computer Services received various letters of commendation for the quality of work provided under difficult circumstances and stringent deadlines
